For LeBron, yoga helps him focus. To relax and increase his strength and flexibility, David Beckham leaned over. Before surfing the waves, Chris Hemsworth warmed up in a yoga pose. Now, researchers have discovered another benefit of practicing yoga: It can extend the time you spend in bed.
According to a recent study published in Trends in Urology & Men's Health, yoga may be just as useful as drugs like sildenafil (Viagra) treat premature ejaculation (PE). moreover without any adverse side effects.
Researchers at Anglia Rusking University in the United Kingdom combed through 54 studies involving 3,485 men and found that after 12 weeks of yoga, men more than tripled the length of their sexual intercourse, from an average of less than 26 seconds to nearly a minute and a half.
They found that a particularly popular yoga pose – downward dog – could help men with premature ejaculation. The study authors found that yoga improved hormone regulation, strengthened pelvic floor muscles and improved reproductive function.
Prefer cardiology? According to another study reviewed by the authors, men who ran for thirty minutes a day, five days a week saw their average intercourse duration increase from 39 seconds to more than thirty minutes. This spike matched the results seen in men who were prescribed the drug dapoxetine (Priligy), which is commonly used to treat PE.
Pelvic floor exercises, such as Kegel exercises for men, have also been shown to be beneficial. Average ejaculation time increased from one minute to three minutes when the movements were performed three times a day for three months.
PE is a common sexual dysfunction that affects up to 50% of men. Lee Smith, professor of public health at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), led the new study. “Given that medications often have side effects, it seems that the best medicine for avoiding premature ejaculation may be exercise after all,” Smith said. However, he also cautioned that further research and larger trials are needed to fully explore this intriguing potential.
Causes of premature ejaculation
According to Cleveland ClinicErectile dysfunction, an overly sensitive penis, low levels of serotonin or dopamine, and emotional factors like stress, depression, and performance anxiety can all lead to premature ejaculation.
According to a 2022 study published in Androgens, hormonal issues, such as a lack or excess of testosterone, can also be a factor in PE.
Men who ejaculate prematurely “again have significantly lower testosterone concentrations than other groups,” according to a 2020 study published in Andrologia. (Secondary premature ejaculation is one that is acquired, as opposed to primary premature ejaculation, which has always existed.) Additionally, UCLA Health noted that men who have low testosterone may have more difficulty ejaculating.
Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) may help prevent premature ejaculation in men with low testosterone. “Testosterone replacement therapy recipients demonstrated a 4.8-fold increase in mean intravaginal ejaculation latency time, while dapoxetine recipients had a 1.8-fold increase,” according to the Andrologia study, indicating that TRT may be much more effective than medications in preventing premature ejaculation.
You may want to consider having your levels assessed if you are experiencing symptoms of low testosterone. You can complete Hone’s in-home assessment in the comfort of your own home. If your treatment request is accepted, it could be delivered right to your door.
