- Delicious crunch. I add a nut streusel topping Before baking for even more flavor and crunch. It gives this apple bread serious Dutch apple pie vibes
- Quick and easy batter. The batter comes together in one bowl and only takes a few minutes to mix. Once it's in the pan, the rest is up to your oven!
What you will need
A few notes on the ingredients for this quick apple pie bread. For a printable list with full amounts, scroll down to the recipe card!
- butter – Salted or unsalted, at room temperature.
- sugar – Regular granulated sugar works here, or you can use light brown sugar.
- Buttermilk – I love the hint of tang and added moisture the buttermilk brings to this bread. If I don't have any in the fridge, I'll make a simple homemade one Substitute for buttermilk With lemon juice (or vinegar) and regular milk.
- Baking powder
- egg
- Vanilla – Be sure to use real vanilla extract (or equal parts vanilla paste) for best flavor.
- flour – The best flour for this apple pie bread is all-purpose flour. Bread flour does not work in quick bread recipes.
- apple – Any firm, sweet tart baking apple that you would use for apple pie filling will work here. My beloved Granny Smith. Other good options are Honeycrisp and Braeburn apples. Peel the apples before starting.
- Add-in – Optional, but I like to bake chopped walnuts and raisins into my apple pie bread for extra texture and flavor.
For the streusel
- Brown sugar – I like to use light or dark brown sugar in the topping. Granulated sugar will also work.
- flour
- butter – I find that it's easiest to slice the butter when it's cold from the fridge.
- nuts – Chopped walnuts or pecans are my favorite for this recipe.
How to Make Apple Pie Bread
Just like banana bread and other quick bread recipes, this recipe has no yeast so the batter comes together, well, fast! Here is a small step by step. You will find printable instructions on the recipe card.
- Make the streusel. To make a crumbly streusel, start by cutting the brown sugar and butter into the flour, then fold in the nuts.
- Make pita. Next, cream together the extra butter and sugar in a separate bowl. Mix buttermilk, baking powder, eggs and vanilla. Gradually mix in the flour.
- Add the apples. Finally, stir in your chopped apples. Other mix-ins, such as nuts and/or raisins can go in at the same time.
- Add streusel topping. Transfer the bread batter to a lined loaf pan and sprinkle the almond streusel on top.
- Bake. Place your apple pie loaf in the oven at 350ºF for about an hour. I usually let the bread cool slightly in the pan before transferring it to a wire rack. This apple pie bread is delicious when it's still warm, or you can let it cool to room temperature (I appreciate the self-control!).
Recipe tips and variations
- Line up the pan. I like to use a strip of parchment to line the bottom and both sides of my loaf pan. This makes it very easy to remove the bread after it has cooled slightly. If you don't have Parchment paperGrease the pan well with butter or shortening instead.
- Do not overmix. As with most baked goods, overmixing quick bread dough will give you a dense, hard loaf that doesn't rise as it should. Be careful not to overdo it when bringing the ingredients together.
- Make it nut free. If you prefer a nut-free streusel, replace the nuts with quick oats like you would use in the crumble topping. Apple crisp.
- Skip the streusel. You can skip the streusel altogether and sprinkle the end of the cinnamon sugar on your apple pie bread like I do. Cinnamon Apple Bread.
- Add a glass. Borrow a simple glass from me Apple Fritter Bread drizzling rain
