I always like to keep certain supplements on hand this time of year, like vitamin C, and elderberry syrup. With all the kids' activities and traveling I do, we're often exposed to germs. Propolis throat spray is a great (and tasty!) way to boost the immune system.
I always keep several bottles of propolis spray at home. That way, I always have some on hand when I need it, for example if I feel a sore throat or blocked sinuses coming on. I love buying this brand, but it is also possible to do it yourself.
What is Propolis?
Bees make propolis from a mixture of resin, beeswax, sap, and other elements. You’ll also find antioxidants like flavonoids and polyphenols in it. It’s essential for their survival, helps protect the hive, and strengthens the structure. It also protects against invaders like diseases and parasites. Not only does it do all this for the bees, but it has amazing properties for humans too.

Where to buy propolis spray
Maybe I've already convinced you to try propolis, but you don't want to make it yourself. The kids and I love it. Beekeeper's Naturals Propolis Spray. It is naturally gluten-free, contains no preservatives, and is made from New Zealand honey. This brand also offers other beehive products, such as lozenges. And if your kids don't like the taste of propolis, they also offer a milder, sweeter propolis for kids.
I usually get their products online, but you can also find them in-store at some health food stores. I've also seen them at Whole Foods.
How to make propolis glycerite
There are two ways to make this throat spray. You can either buy a pre-made propolis glycerin or make it yourself. Glycerites Herbal tinctures are similar to herbal tinctures, but instead of using alcohol, you use vegetable glycerin. They do take 6 weeks to make, though, so if you're in a hurry, buying one may be the best option.
Glycerins are safe for children, naturally sweet, and do not burn or irritate the throat like alcohol. Here's how to make bee propolis extract with glycerin:
- Put 2/3 cup of propolis powder in a 16 oz glass jar.
- Mix 3/4 cup glycerin with 1/4 cup distilled water in a separate jar and stir well.
- Pour the glycerin/water mixture over the propolis powder and stir to combine.
- Place the lid on the jar and shake daily for 6 weeks.
- Strain the liquid through a coffee filter into a clean jar (this will take a while!). You may need to repeat this step twice to remove all the powder.
You can easily double or halve this recipe depending on your preference. Once you have your propolis glycerin or have purchased it, you are ready to make the throat spray!
DIY Propolis Throat Spray
This honey and propolis throat spray is great for soothing sore throats. You can also use it daily to help your immune system function at its best!
Yield: 1 ounce
-
Mix propolis, water and honey in a small spray bottle and shake to mix.
-
Add more water, 1/8 teaspoon at a time if necessary to get the right consistency. You want the mixture to be thick enough to coat your throat, but just thin enough to squeeze out of the spray bottle.
Store the mixture in the refrigerator. It should keep for several weeks.
If your honey is already too runny, you may not need to add water. You can try without water at first to see if it works. Mine came out of the sprayer reluctantly, but worked much better once diluted with a little water. However, the more water you add, the shorter the shelf life, so use sparingly!
How to use propolis throat spray
I like to use a propolis spray at the first sign of illness. Just apply a few sprays directly into the throat. Kids also like it because it tastes good and is sweet! This spray is also very effective on a trip or anytime you need an extra boost for your immune system. I always carry some with me when I'm on a plane to help reduce inflammation.
