Why I love these Halloween cupcakes
How adorable are these magical broom Halloween cupcakes?! Growing up terrified of the Wicked Witch of the West, I've come a long way. This is a fun and easy Halloween party dessert that you can make with a batch of your favorite cake batter, decorated to look like a witch's broom. Here's what makes this tutorial so great:
- Perfect for parties. These cupcake brooms look so sweet on the Halloween dessert table! They're great for parties and they don't take a ton of prep.
- Make them from scratch, or not. Use your favorite homemade cupcake recipe or a box of cake mix, it's up to you. The same goes for the buttercream frosting.
- Simple trick. You don't have to be a pro cake decorator to master these magical cupcakes. The technique is very simple, and you don't even need a piping bag to make the broom design. A Ziploc bag with corners snipped off works, too!
What you will need
Let's take a quick look at what you need to make these magical cupcakes from scratch or semi-homemade. Scroll down to the recipe card for a printable list with complete tutorials.
- cupcakes – Any cupcake recipe you want! I have a simple recipe Vanilla Cupcakes And Chocolate cupcakesAnd this Pumpkin Cupcakes Great for Halloween. You can also use a store-bought box of cake mix.
- Frosting – Choose your favorite store-bought or homemade vanilla frosting.
- food coloring – I recommend gel food coloring for bright yellow frosting like a broomhead. AmeriColor and Wilton make popular gel colors.
- Pretzels – You will need pretzel rods for the broom handles. I recommend plain or salty rod and no funky flavor.
- Mini donuts – Any type you like, frosted or unfrosted, such as Hostess or similar mini donuts.
- Roll up the fruit – Who remembers the lunchbox of childhood? You will need a roll-up, which you will cut into thin strips to wrap around the broom handles. Pull-and-Peel Twizzlers are another good option, or you can pipe red or black frosting instead.
- Piping bags and piping tips – I use a Wilton #48 basket-weave tip to pipe straw-like bristles on my broom. You can also use a small open-round detailing tip to pipe individual frosting bristles.
How to Make Magical Broom Cupcakes
This tutorial is super easy, so if it's your first time decorating Halloween cupcakes, they're almost foolproof! Here are the steps. You'll find printable details on the recipe card below the post.
- Bake the cupcakes. If you're using cake mix, prepare and bake a batch of cupcakes following the recipe directions or box directions. I bake mine in one Mini cupcake pan.
- Make the frosting. Next, whip up a batch Vanilla Frosting. Color the frosting yellow using gel food dye or similar.
- Frost the cupcakes. Now, spread a thin layer of frosting on top of each cupcake.
- Prepare the donuts. If necessary, use the tip of a sharp knife to hollow out the centers of the mini donuts, just enough so that the pretzel rods fit into the holes.
- Create a “broom” shape. Place a mini donut on top of each cupcake. Stick a pretzel through the donut and into the cupcake to make a broom handle. Use yellow frosting to cover the outside of the donuts.
- decorate outside Using a piping bag fitted with a basket-weave tip, pipe excess frosting onto the donuts to create a fluffy broom.
- Finish and enjoy! Finally, wrap a piece of fruit roll-up around the base of the pretzel. Pipe a small ring of frosting on top of the fruit roll-up and your magical broom is ready to eat.
Tips for success
- If you don't have a piping bag or piping tips, You can still decorate cupcakes this Halloween. Fill a small ziplock baggie with yellow frosting and snip off the corner. Use the tip to pipe thin “bristles” onto the mini donuts instead.
- Substitute donuts. Instead of donuts, you can make a “broom” shape using Reese's minis, which are taller than regular Reese's peanut butter cups. Add a ridge mini to each cupcake, stick a pretzel in the center and frost the outside as usual.
- Add sprinkles. You can get creative with any additional decorations you want! Finish these Halloween cupcakes with a sprinkle of black and orange jimmies or nonpareil or sanding sugar.
What to Serve with Halloween Cupcakes
If you're throwing a spooktacular Halloween bash this year, these witchy broom cupcakes look great on a dessert table. I like to serve them with more Halloween treats Rice Krispie Treats filled with candy corn, Pumpkin Cheesecake BarsAnd this is gooey Apple dump cake. These are Halloween cookies with chocolate sprinkles Another easy treat!
How to Store Frosted Cupcakes
- At room temperature. Decorated Halloween cupcakes will last 3 days at room temperature. Store frozen cupcakes in an airtight container.
- to freeze I recommend frosting the cupcakes before frosting and decorating. Store them in a freezer-safe container or freezer bag and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw cupcakes in refrigerator before decorating.
