To have better immune health, it helps to focus on improving gut health.
Why? This is because the gut and the immune system are closely linked – our gut is often the first line of defense when a virus invades the body.
It can answer the question of why some people are always healthy, while others often get sick.
At first glance it may not make sense. How does a virus that attacks our respiratory system also affect our gut?
This is because our gut microbiome regulates the host's defenses against viral infections, including respiratory viruses such as the flu virus.* This happens by activating antiviral immune mechanisms and preventing excessive inflammation.
The microbiome consists of trillions of bacteria, fungi (especially yeast), protozoa, and viruses that all contribute to maintaining a balanced ecosystem for good human health. When the gut becomes unbalanced, it breaks down in a way that leads to disease in a phenomenon known as microbiome dysbiosis.
If you've ever had that sick feeling in the pit of your gut when you first get sick, then you know what I'm talking about.
Ginger is a very good herb for the intestines. It has a strong spicy yet warming aroma and has powerful antibiotic and antiviral properties. Ginger is anti-nausea as it has natural enzymes that relieve nausea and vomiting. This makes it an excellent choice for morning sickness and motion sickness.
The gut microbiome performs many beneficial functions together, and one of them involves nurturing the immune system. The immune system doesn't work independently – it's closely linked to the gut, so what we eat (or don't eat) and the exercise we do or don't do all affect gut health.
So to have a healthier immune system, it makes sense to have good gut health.
