for the hash
- Butternut Squash- You can leave it on the skin if you want.
- sweet potato- They should have orange skin, not purple. They are not the same as yams.
- olive oil- Corn, canola, and vegetable oils also work.
- salt and pepper- Kosher salt and freshly-cracked black pepper are best.
- cinnamon- If it has any large lumps, strain it or break it up with your fingers.
For the cinnamon butter
- butter- Unsalted is best, but you can also use salted butter.
- honey – Feel free to use maple syrup or agave nectar.
- cinnamon- Do not swap it for ground nutmeg as the flavor will be overly earthy.
How to Make Butternut Sweet Potato Hash
It's a toss-and-roast side! Set a timer so you don't forget it in the oven. Scroll to the bottom of the post for the full recipe card.
- Prepare the oven. Preheat it to 400F.
- Season them. Toss squash and sweet potatoes in a large bowl with olive oil, salt, pepper and cinnamon.
- Roast them. Spread the vegetables on a baking sheet. Pop them in the oven for 30 minutes. Stir them with a wooden spatula and roast for another 15 minutes. Remove it from the oven and let it cool.
- Make the cinnamon butter. Beat the butter with the honey and cinnamon until fluffy and completely combined. You can also use a hand-mixer for this.
- serve Add the cinnamon butter over the hash. Serve and enjoy!
Tips and modification ideas
This Spicy Sweet Potato Hash is a great way to use up leftover veggies and turkey from other holiday meals.
- More vegetables. Chop the remaining bell pepper, mushrooms, baby potatoes, carrots and cauliflower. Toss them with the sweet potatoes and squash. 1-3 cups of vegetables is enough.
- Swap the butter. If you're in a hurry, use your favorite sweet compound butter instead of the homemade cinnamon butter. Herbie's compound butter also works.
- Add crunch. Once out of the oven, sprinkle with 1/2-1 cup chopped pecans, walnuts, cranberries or sunflower seeds for extra texture.
- Look at the knife. Make sure you cut all the vegetables into pieces that are more or less the same size to cook.
- Add spices. Toss the vegetables with 1/4-1/2 teaspoon paprika and 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper for some earthy heat.

Serving advice

Do not freeze it as it will lose its crisp edges and the vegetables will change consistency once thawed.
- Fridge: Store the hash in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Store the cinnamon butter in an individual container for up to a week.
- To reheat it: Sprinkle hash with 1/2 teaspoon water and microwave for one minute or until heated through. You can bake it at 300F for 20-25 minutes. Once hot add cinnamon butter on top.
