California-style burritos typically include both cooked and fresh ingredients. There are a few different versions you can make, but we love the delicious and complex combination of traditional fillings shared here.
Material notes
- Tortillas: Large burrito-sized flour tortillas. Use whole wheat or gluten-free, if you roll that way.
- Grilled Meat: Use our classics Fried Carne Asada or Slow Cooker Carne Asada recipe
- Cheese: Shredded Mexican blend, plain cheddar, or your choice of melted cheese.
- Mexican Rice: Can be prepared fresh or use leftovers Homemade rice. Can swap with Spanish riceBox Mexican rice, or brown rice.
- Pico de Gallo: or the salsa.
- Sour Cream: Swap for full fat, low fat, or Greek yogurt.
- Guacamole: Shop bought, or go for home made.
- Cilantro and Onion: Both are in pico de gallo, but you can add more to taste. You can load other vegetables here! Try chopped lettuce, Pickled jalapeñosor pickled red onion.
Chef's Tips
- Don't overload your tortillas. If you want to use less than on the recipe card because the tortillas are smaller, do so.
- Add the meat when done nice and hot So that the cheese can melt into it. If using leftovers you can reheat in the microwave first.
- Make sure to have steak Cut against the grain Best for chewing.
- Drain off any excess juice from the salsa and other veggies so they don't drip all over.
- Add ingredients Spread evenly over tortillas So you get something of everything in every bite.
