Cucumber salad is heavily involved in German cuisine with a dish known as Gurkensalat. It is a popular side dish that has reached America. Although this dish originated in Germany, it has made its way around the world, including with German immigrants to the United States. There are several variations within Germany, and even more so in the US. This creamy version is a popular choice due to its simple ingredients and easy preparation.
What kind of cucumber should I use?
English cucumbers have more flavor and fewer seeds and are perfect for making cucumber salads. If you don't have English cucumbers, you can use regular seedless cucumbers. Since they are small, you need to double the amount you use. We do not recommend using seeded cucumbers in this recipe.
Peel or don't peel
Cucumber is not harmful for the skin. In fact, it can be a great source of fiber and nutrients. If you don't like cucumber skin, you can always take the time and effort to peel it. But for those who prefer it, give your cucumber a quick wash and slice!
Fresh vs Dried Dill:
Fresh dill is strongly preferred in this recipe because it has a good flavor. If you can't find or have access to fresh dill, you can use dried dill, but you have to use it sparingly. You will need 2-3 teaspoons of dried dill.
Storage instructions
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
