How to Use Essential Oils for Yoga Practice
When used properly, essential oils can be powerful and healing to the mind and body.
There are some words of caution to keep in mind. Be respectful when using oils in a yoga class setting. Loading up on peppermint oil may be stimulating to you, but it could be distracting to others around you.
You also may not want to try a new oil right before starting a yoga routine, it could turn out to be an unfavorable aroma for you. One time I used a premade blend on my wrists with an aroma that I initially loved. About 15 minutes after having it on, it was just too overpowering but I was stuck with it through the workout.
Experiment with oils to see what YOU enjoy most. Here are some ways to incorporate oils:
Diffuse Oils
One easy way to enjoy aromatherapy during yoga is with an ultrasonic essential oil diffuser. I recommend diffusing citrus oils like grapefruit, tangerine, lime, lemon, or orange. These oils are uplifting yet are not too overpowering. Citrus oils also help reduce airborne microbes, especially helpful in a class setting.
Apply Oils to Skin
Use essential oils topically on wrists, neck, or upper chest. This way you will be able to inhale them as you are going through your routine. Be sure to use properly diluted essential oils using a carrier oil. Recommended level is a 2% dilution for a healthy adult. That equals about 12 drops of essential oils per one ounce of carrier oil.
If using a roller bottle (10 ml), for a 2% dilution you only need 4 drops of essential oil, then fill the rest of the bottle with a carrier oil like jojoba oil. Roller bottles are convenient. Make one ahead of time so you are ready for a mess free application prior to your yoga routine.
Wear an Essential Oil Necklace
One reason I love using a diffuser necklace with my essential oils is because I can keep the aroma in my personal space. While many people love using essential oils, not everyone does.
Using diffuser jewelry lets you enjoy aromatherapy effects without inconveniencing others around you. Especially great when at a yoga class, you can inhale the aroma from your necklace without offending anyone.
Yoga Routine Diffuser Blends
Add essential oils to diffuser with recommended water for your diffuser tank. Read more about diffusing essential oils. I like to use a 100-200 ml water tank diffuser but you can use whatever size you prefer.
