Now that EMF and WiFi are everywhere, many of us are exploring the benefits of reconnecting with the healing frequencies of the earth. Although I try to walk barefoot outside every day, it's a little more difficult in the winter. The good news is that it's still possible to reap the benefits of grounding while indoors. I use and recommend grounding sheets to stay grounded every night while sleeping.
What is Earthing/Grounding?
Grounding or “earthing” refers to the connection of the body to the electrical energy of the earth. “Grounding” traditionally meant connecting electrical equipment to earth for safety purposes. Earthing is a newer term that refers to intentional physical contact with the Earth for health benefits.
Clint Ober, a cable television installer, is credited with pioneering the modern Earthing movement. He started the conversation through his 2010 book inspired by his health experiments. He also founded the Earthing Institute, which supports scientific research into the benefits of earthing.
Since the benefits of grounding have been brought to attention, all kinds of grounding products have appeared. They are designed to help people benefit from grounding while working and sleeping indoors. One of these inventions is ground sheets.
What are ground sheets?
Ground sheets (also known as ground sheets) are special flat or fitted sheets designed to connect the body to the earth's natural electrical charge at night. The idea is based on the concept that direct contact with the earth allows free electrons from the earth's surface to flow into the body.
How do ground sheets work?

How to use grounding products safely
First, make sure your home's electrical system is properly grounded before using a plug-based grounding pad. Some grounding products come with a plug checker and product tester, so you can make sure you have a grounded electrical outlet. If you are unsure about a particular wall outlet, consult an electrician.
Place the sheet on your mattress as with a fitted sheet or a flat sheet. Make sure it covers the area your skin will touch directly while sleeping. Attach the cord that comes with the sheet to the sheet itself. The other end of the cord will:
- Plug into the ground port of a standard wall outlet (third prong) if your home's electrical system is properly grounded.
- Connect it to a ground rod that you place outside, which is connected directly to the ground.
When you go to bed, make sure your skin (legs, feet or any part of your body) touches the conductive part of the sheet while you sleep. Direct contact is necessary for grounding and reaping the benefits.
You can use grounding sheets on your bed, on a couch, or even on your yoga mat. Many people bring them with them when traveling to stay in hotels, vacation rentals, or when staying with family or friends.
When to use grounding sheets
Using grounding sheets during sleep is ideal for long, continuous contact, potentially improving sleep quality and promoting recovery. However, you don't have to wait until bedtime to use grounding sheets or a grounding mat. Here are some additional ideas on when to use them:
- Rest or relaxation: When reading, meditating, or napping, grounding sheets can help you feel calm and reduce stress.
- Works: If you spend long hours sitting at a desk, try placing a ground sheet on your chair to stay grounded.
- Recovery after training: Used after exercise, resting on grounding sheets can help reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).
- When you feel the effects of pain or inflammation: If you have chronic pain or inflammation, consider using grounding sheets while resting. Maybe even keep one on a certain sofa. It can help alleviate these symptoms over time.
So when should you avoid using grounding sheets? Here are some precautions.
Precautions for using grounding sheets
If you use medical equipment such as a pacemaker, be aware that grounding may interfere with the medical equipment. Those sensitive to EMFs may also not do well with ground sheets. Consult a physician before use if any of these situations apply to you.
If a grounding plate is damaged or not properly grounded, it can pose a safety hazard. Make sure all components are in working order and properly connected. Likewise, if the outlet you plan to use is poorly grounded, it may also be unsafe. Test to make sure the plug is properly grounded before use.
Avoid using ground sheets during thunderstorms. If lightning strikes nearby, grounding can be dangerous. However, the likelihood of anything happening is extremely small.
Grounding sheets can also benefit children, especially for sleep and relaxation. Just keep in mind the same precautions above. For infants or toddlers, consult your pediatrician first. Small children have more sensitive skin, so they may have different reactions.
Also, check with your pediatrician if your child has any medical conditions or uses devices such as insulin pumps or pacemakers.
How to find good quality grounding sheets
So how do you find a great set of ground sheets? Look for something with organic cotton and sterling silver fiber for conductivity. You want it to be at least 5% metal, but 10% might work better. If it's a grounding mat for somewhere other than the bed, these can be made with conductive carbon instead of cotton.

What do I do?
I use a grounding mat while sitting at my desk to stay grounded throughout my work day. I also have a grounding sheet on my bed that keeps me grounded all night.
