Tips for the best hamburger buns
- Leave the buns full proof and double to achieve a super smooth texture.
- When placing the hamburger buns on a baking sheet, make sure there is enough space between the buns, but close enough that they will touch when fully insulated and puffed up. This will ensure that they retain their shape during baking.
- Brush the buns with milk before baking, to give them a wonderful color.
- Do not overbake them as the crust will turn out dark and crusty.
- We brush them with butter as soon as we take them out of the oven to preserve their softness.
Sourdough Hamburger Buns Timeline
- If your starter needs food, remember to do so the night before or early in the morning of the day you plan to make your dough.
- If you want to make your dough the same day you want to bake, then mix the dough ingredients in the morning, which means your starter needs to be fed and active the night before. Allow the dough to ferment at room temperature. By late afternoon the buns should be ready to bake.
- If you prefer to make the dough the day before baking, mix the dough ingredients in the afternoon, let it ferment on the kitchen counter during the day, and refrigerate the dough overnight.
- The dough can be refrigerated for up to 2 days
- In the morning, take the dough out of the fridge and shape the buns, leaving them aside to rise. The rise may take longer as the dough is cold.
