CCTV footage shows the moment the woman thought she was having a heart attack.
More than 6 million people have seen the video on Tick Tock of Jazz Davis' first chest problems while working as a property manager in Los Angeles.
Davis, 33, told Newsweek in an interview: “It was a quiet day at work. At that point, I wasn't provoked or engaged in any strenuous activity. I didn't have any other symptoms until a few hours later, when I started having chest pains.”
“I tried to relax, snack, and watch something on my phone to distract myself,” she continued. “Then the pain in my chest suddenly got worse. I started sweating a lot, my vision got blurry, and I really thought I was going to die. It was really, really scary.”
In the video, which is described as “The scariest moment of my entire life,” Davis is seen holding her chest while sitting at her desk. Then, with her hand still in place, she paces around the office until she calls emergency services.
Despite the 18-degree ambient temperature, Davis said she was sweating profusely. She told the 911 operator she thought she was having a heart attack because the pain was unprecedented and she thought she would not survive.
She notes that she called for help at 12:22 p.m. and that paramedics arrived at 12:26 p.m., praising them for arriving in less than four minutes.
Fortunately, the paramedics ruled out the possibility of a heart attack as the reason for her symptoms, but they still sent her to the hospital for further testing. CostochondritisAn inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum was identified in Davis.
Research published in the journal American Family Physician indicates that people over 40 are most often affected by the disease.
Costochondritis is estimated to be present in 13–36% of patients who present as emergency care due to chest pain.
However, to rule out life-threatening conditions like a heart attack, the Mayo Clinic advises getting emergency medical help if you experience chest pain.
Newsweek was told by Davis, who goes by @jazz_5390 on TikTok, that “the cause (of costochondritis) is sometimes completely unknown.”
“I had a bit of a breakdown before going to work,” she continued. “Life can sometimes seem very busy and I feel completely overwhelmed. However, I quickly pulled myself together and was immediately restored.”
Since Davis uploaded his video on August 1, he has received a tremendous amount of support. Over 7,700 comments and 227,200 likes have been received so far.
While some are taking the situation lightly, others are sending him their best wishes. One person said: “Me when McDonald's forgets my sauces.”
Another person shared their personal experience: “Yes, I had that! I went to the emergency room and had multiple tests and scans; my inflamed rib was the only thing that triggered the panic attack, and now I’m anxious.”
Another TikToker commented: “The worst part is that this is happening for NO REASON, out of NOWHERE!?!”
