Why our recipe?
- The drink tastes just like the one you see at every carnival and state fair.
- It is best to have a fresh squeeze which is as good to look at as it is to drink.
Last summer my family had a dutch oven cook-off and they couldn't get enough of this fantastic drink. This is my go-to drink for a summer day crowd. We'll be sipping on this sweet, refreshing treat when we have an excuse to have a neighborhood potluck or outdoor barbecue. It doesn't officially feel like summer until we have something this cool, refreshingly delicious.
Material notes
- Orange, lemon and lime juice: Fresh juice is best for a bright summer flavor, but in a pinch, you can substitute a 12-ounce can of frozen concentrate for each fruit.
- Pomegranate Juice: This tartness provides the perfect balance to the citrus sweetener. Texas twister recipes often call for grenadine syrup, but this great substitute is much easier to find.
- Sugar: Listen, you can leave it out, but if you're going to cut back on sugar, diet soda is a great place to cut back.
- Water: Adjust the ratio of water and lemon-lime soda if it's a little too sweet for your taste.
- Lemon Lime Soda: It brings an extra punch of sweetness and fizz that really quenches those cravings.
- Maraschino Cherries: The smoothness of the cherry adds the finishing touch to the combination of flavors. Make sure to use all of the cherries and juice.
Save for later
We like to make a huge batch because it freezes so well and then we can use it throughout the summer. Mix the fruit juice and sugar together to make a simple paste. Simply pour the concentrate into a gallon freezer bag and refrigerate until solid.
Run the frozen bag under warm water to thaw the concentrate until you can break it up into small pieces with your hands. Then place the ice concentrate in a pitcher and add water and lemon-lime soda to your liking. This extra liquid should be enough to melt the rest. Give it a stir, add your maraschino cherries, and serve.
Storage instructions
Keep in fridge Up to seven days after mixing in an airtight container. The carbonation of the drink will be lost, but the juice and flavor will remain.
