What is a Kaiser Roll?
Roll Kaiser is a type of round bread with a crust, originating from Austria. Today there are many versions of this delicious roll, varying in size and taste, depending on the type of seeds the bakers have chosen to fill them with. You can find them filled with poppy seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds or sunflower seeds – yum! Traditionally, kaiser rolls are enjoyed plain, served with butter or jam.
History of the Kaiser Rolls
Kaiser rolls date from around 1760, and are supposedly named in honor of Kaiser (Emperor) Franz Joseph I of Austria. It's usually made from simple ingredients, like flour, yeast, salt, sugar and butter, and topped with seeds for a crunch and a bit of flavor.
The tops of the bread rolls were traditionally carved into five segments to create a rough star-shaped crown, in honor of the Kaiser, who liked to feast on them every morning with a cup of tea and some cold meat.
What makes Kaiser Rolls different?
Not only are Kaiser rolls absolutely delicious, but the traditional and unique crest carved into each roll is what makes them especially distinct from regular rolls.
In addition, Kaiser rollers are significantly larger in diameter when compared to a regular one good hamburger, which allows the option of loading your sandwiches or burgers with as many toppings as you want. And you won't have to worry about your ingredients falling out. The large, plush buns will keep them snug and absorb the various delicious flavors without getting wet or tearing.
That way, you can enjoy every bite!
